After a break over the summer of 2012 Portland Rocks returned bigger and better than before. Originally set up as Youth Music project in 2009 working with young people aged 11-18 we soon realised that there was a need to develop community music and arts across the age range on Portland meeting a valuable community need. The Portland Rocks Community Interest Company (a not for profit company)is run by a team consisting of local musicians and teachers Martyn Mullender, James Kimber and Steve Garden supported by Tom Hopkins and the new status allows us to respond to local need in a much more flexible way and we will be developing exiting new strands. We are grateful to the Co-op Community fund for the original financial support in setting up the new organisation.
Those who attend our sessions will also have the opportunity to gain accreditation through the arts award and as a community interest company we will involve our members in the running of the organisation. We will also be looking for volunteers to help us in our work including recruiting young adult trainees.
Having ceased running weekly workshops in July 2015 the CIC now has a number of new strands under development. A new download label has been set up to support composers of original music in the Weymouth, Portland and the wider Dorset area, we are working on delivering an art project at the Portland Museum and hope to set up a music school offering music tuition and ensemble opportunities during 2016-17.
